Get 100GB of online storage for only $1/year – No, really, only $1/year

IDrive is doing a special deal right now for 100GB (50GB for backup/50GB for sync) of storage for only $1/year. You can only get the subscription deal through the iPhone/iPad/Android app, but you should sign up through this link first to get an extra 1GB of storage for free. And according to IDrive reps, this is an on-going deal, not just a one-year special.

If you don’t already have an account, sign up here to make sure you get your free extra 1GB. Then, download and install the iOS app. Once you sign in, there’s a little banner at the bottom of the front page that takes you to a screen where you can tap “Upgrade to iDrive Pro 50GB ($0.99)”. It’ll prompt you for your iTunes password and a purchase confirmation.

To get the extra 50GB for sync, you just login to the website and turn it on. Plus, it lets you set your own encryption key if you want to make the data extra secure. Of course, if you do that, you can’t share files/folders with other people and if you lose the encryption key, your data is gone.

So go get your cloud storage on! That’s a thing the kids say these days, right?

Right?

Lock that $#@% up! 1Password for iOS goes on sale

There are a number of apps out there for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android that are capable of securely storing your passwords to all the websites you visit, but there is one that is king of them all. 1Password started life as a Mac app that did basically the same thing that it does today: stored passwords in a secure database. But, as time passed, AgileBits (the developers of 1Password) began to add more features, like Dropbox and iCloud syncing, the ability to store software serial numbers, and the capability to store encrypted notes and credit card information.

But their greatest achievement was to build an iOS version of 1Password that could remain in sync with the Mac version so you had all of your information with you wherever you went. I’ve been a big user of 1Password since its initial version and have upgraded to each subsequent version with glee. Some of my friends and family can’t justify the cost of the software when there are free (albeit vastly inferior) options.

Well, for those of you cheapskates out there, get excited, because 1Password for iOS is currently on sale for $8, and it’s well worth the price (especially if you already have a copy of 1Password for your Mac or Windows computer). Even if you don’t have the desktop counterpart, the iOS app is still a great way to store critical information that you need to have with you at all times, but that you want to keep secure. All the data is encrypted on your device, can be backed up to Dropbox or iCloud (where it is still encrypted), and is secured with a password to prevent someone from accessing it, even if they have access to your iPhone or iPad.

While the new iCloud Keychain in Mavericks and iOS 7 might make some of the features in 1Password redundant, the extra features that 1Password provides more than make up for the cost (especially if you prefer to use Dropbox to iCloud for syncing your data).

If you’re interested in checking it out, then you can get it here. Please leave a comment or drop me a line if you have questions about my 1Password usage or just want to know more.

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance

Anyone that knows me well knows that I have a very sincere love for the hack n’ slash genre. Perhaps love is not a strong enough word. I have a rabid obsession with the genre. From Diablo to Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance to X-Men Legends to Torchlight (also available on Steam). I’ve spent many, many hours in the genre, which has both bolstered and been bolstered by my love of dungeon crawler board games (Warhammer Quest and HeroQuest being the two biggest culprits).

So when the iPhone first got the ability to run 3rd-party applications, I waited impatiently for a Diablo clone to appear. Eventually, several did. Unfortunately, in the beginning, they were severely lacking in both controls and visual appeal. Then, along came Gameloft’s Xerox process, bringing the very best of the genre to the iPhone. The controls left a bit to be desired at first, but were improved soon after release. Once I got used to the idea of using a virtual joystick on the iPhone, I flew through the campaign.

Soon, a sequel followed, and brought with it multiplayer features. My oldest son and I played it quite a bit and loved it. When it was announced that the original Dungeon Hunter was coming to PS3 as a downloadable title, with 4-player coop, I got a little jealous of my PS3-owning brethren. But, thankfully, the game made its way to the Mac App Store.

And now, to the meat of the article: it’s currently on sale for $0.99. If you love the hack n’ slash genre at all, or even if you just want a fun Mac game to pass the time, you should definitely use that $1.08 (tax will, of course, vary) that’s been burning a hole in your digital wallet and pick it up.

UPDATE 2/13 (11:16 am CST): It would appear that the pricing on this may have been in error. I’m already receiving reports that others are getting an error when attempting to download the game. Perhaps Gameloft priced it at $0.99 in error. Anyway, if you managed to pick it up while it was on sale, congrats. If not, keep trying until the price officially reverts.

UPDATE 2/13 (3:16 pm CST):The first person to inform me of issues with purchasing has confirmed that he was able to download it just moments ago. So, the sale is apparently still available.

Free CrossOver Pro download is now live

That’s right, I said PRO. As in, the full version of CrossOver Mac, which includes CrossOver Games. It also includes 12 months of support at Level 2, and the ability to renew support every year for $35 (or free if they ever have a promotion like this again). This is a $70 value, for $0 and you really can’t beat that. But remember, you have until 11:59 PM (23:59) Central Standard Time to sign up and use your free serial key to authenticate. The serial keys will no longer be good after that time, so go do it now.

Free CodeWeavers software on Oct 28th

The guys over at CodeWeavers said that if President George W. Bush would actually accomplish one of several goals in his last days as President that they would give away free software for one day. One of those goals was to get gas prices in the Twin Cities down to $2.79/gal. Sadly, this actually occurred as the economy imploded (blame Codeweavers, they’re willing to take the blame.

The good news is, tomorrow you can visit CodeWeavers’ website and get free software (probably the standard version of CrossOver Mac, but possibly CrossOver Games, as well). This is kind of a big deal for those of you with Intel Macs but don’t want to a) waste hard drive space on—, or b) have to pay for Windows. So be sure to check ’em out tomorrow. For all the details on the reasoning for this and the other goals that President Bush can achieve to result in another free software day in the future, visit this site.
