About two weeks ago, my son and I had this exchange while he was cracking open acorns outside.<\/p>\n

Avery:<\/strong> I found a baby!<\/p>\n Me:<\/strong> What?<\/p>\n Avery:<\/strong> I found a baby inside one.<\/p>\n Me:<\/strong> (looking at the acorn) That’s just the nut.<\/p>\n Avery:<\/strong> (setting the acorn half on the coffee table) But I found something little in there.<\/p>\n Me:<\/strong> Let me see it.<\/p>\n I wasn’t sure what he was talking about, but figured that if I took another look, I’d be able to explain what it was. Sure enough, there was a larva of some sort curled up in the “meat” of the acorn.<\/p>\n Me:<\/strong> You’re right. That’s a larva.<\/p>\n Avery:<\/strong> A what?<\/p>\n Me:<\/strong> A baby insect. Take it outside.<\/p>\n Avery:<\/strong> What does it do?<\/p>\n Me:<\/strong> It grows into a bug. I don’t want it in the house. Take it outside.<\/p>\n He proceeds to take it outside, but mutters something I couldn’t quite make out. When he comes back in, I ask him about it.<\/p>\n Avery:<\/strong> Oh, I was putting some grass on the Martha.<\/p>\n Me:<\/strong> The what?<\/p>\n Avery:<\/strong> The Martha, or whatever it’s called.<\/p>\n Me:<\/strong> Oh. The LARVA.<\/p>\n Avery:<\/strong> Yeah.
